While most bruises are harmless, certain patterns should prompt a doctor’s visit.
See a doctor if you have:
- Bruises that appear without any injury
- Frequent nosebleeds or bleeding gums
- Bruises that are large, painful, or slow to heal
- Petechiae (tiny red or purple dots on the skin — a sign of low platelets)
- Family history of bleeding disorders
- Recent start of new medication

Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
